Homework in Year 6 enables pupils to reinforce the learning that has taken place at school to ensure that they are secure in their learning of key concepts. Completing homework enables pupils to make good progress in their learning, take ownership of their learning and it also helps to prepare them to become independent learners and manage their own time effectively in preparation for secondary school and life beyond.
In Year 6, children will be set the following weekly homework and this should be recorded in the home school diary:
Spellings - spelling tasks will be uploaded to Google Classroom each Monday and will link to the lessons done in class. They will also be copied into children’s home school diaries. This should be completed in short 10-15 minute bursts throughout the week to ensure children are revising spellings frequently. Children will have a spelling challenge each Friday using these spellings. Purple spelling books can be kept at home so that children can complete weekly tasks in them. These do not need to be returned to school.
Maths - this will be set weekly online through www.mymaths.co.uk. Children should also access Times Tables Rock Stars in short 10-15 minute bursts throughout the week.
English - either a reading comprehension or SPAG task will be uploaded to Google Classroom weekly on a Monday and needs to be completed by the Friday of the same week. This must be completed online.
Topic - half termly challenges will be set at the beginning of each topic. These will be stuck into homework books. It is up to children to decide which pieces of homework they complete in order to collect 15 points over the half term.
As well as the above homework all children are expected to read on at least 3 days a week. Once their book is finished, children should complete a quiz on Accelerated Reader. Dojos will be rewarded for consistent reading.
Homework will be uploaded on a Monday and should be completed by Friday of the same week. Please ensure your child has completed their homework each week.
